THE HITCHING POST IS OPEN AGAIN

Claudia and Jim Barker and Leslie and Ned Helm recently opened a general store called The Hitching Post at the Cumberland Trailhead in the stone building that you have probably passed many times. Claudia and Jim own Big South Fork Lodge, just across the road, and have for a long time been supplying horse campers with forgotten tack items, forgotten RV/LQ items, food items, shavings, etc. All of that will now be consolidated in a very convenient setting.

Leslie and Ned live on Trailhead Lane, less than a quarter of a mile away, in Spruce Creek, and have moved their 20-year-old mail-order company, Wingset Country Clothing, into one end.  The Hitching Post carries basic tack items and welcomes consignment tack and stable items for the “back room” as well as consignment items that pertain to horse camping and maybe even cabins.

More importantly, they carry basic food staples, picnic supplies, pharmaceuticals, pet food etc. as well as camping supplies and some automotive supplies for those who need to top up or make minor repairs. They also carry cold beer, sold by the six-pack or by the case, as well as cases of soda and cases of water.

They welcome suggestions and want to stock what YOU need, so stop by. The phone number at the store is 752-2888.

HORSE STUFF HAS CHRISTMAS CARDS

Stephanie Richmond says to stop in early because she has a great selection of Leanin’ Tree  Christmas cards in stock and they are usually gone long before Christmas.

PLEASE MEET…

Howard & Lynn Tucker who recently purchased Barb and Tom Jancek’s house at 612 Spruce Creek Drive.   They will spend half of the year in Florida and the other half in Tennessee.

We will miss Barb and Tom in Spruce Creek but they are only up the road at their Twin Parks property.

QUICK TIPS

Reporting Trail Problems on BSF Trails

If you encounter down trees or bad spots on the BSF trails, please notify Wally Linder, the trail crew leader in BSF at (423) 569-9778.  The trail crew does a great job keeping the trails in good shape but appreciates input from riders when there is a problem.

Big South Fork also keeps track of volunteer hours and they can count your input in these hours.

It’s not “911” in Big South Fork!

If you have an emergency in BSF and are still in Fentress County do not dial 911.  Dialing 911 routes the call to Scott County and hampers rescue efforts because the dispatchers are not familiar with our side of the park.  Instead, program your cell phone to 879-8142 or (931) 879-8142 and your call will be taken by the Jamestown dispatcher who is familiar with the trails, trailheads and roads.

ANSWERS TO PHOTO QUIZ

The photos of the two little girls are Joyce Pickard and her twin sister Jeane.  They are on a two year old horse called Diamond, who would walk around and around the house if the reins were tied up. Diamond contracted tetanus and had to be put down.

The other lovely lady is Donna Drochak. She is on one of the Quarter Horses she has owned.  She is quite the horsewoman and has won many championships, including state championships and several saddles.  She has also been a professional horse show photographer and was the official photographer at the Dixie National.

OCTOBER 5-11 NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

Fast Facts about Fire and Cooking

Cooking fires are the #1 of home fires and home fire injuries.

In 2005, cooking equipment was involved in 146,400 reported home structure fires, the largest share for any major cause. These fires resulted in 480 civilian deaths, 4,690 civilian injuries, and $876 million in direct property damage.

The majority of home fires – 40% – start in the kitchen.

Unattended cooking is the leading factor contributing to ignition in home cooking fires, accounting for one-third of such fires. More than half of all cooking fire injuries occurred when people tried to fight the fire themselves.

Most home cooking fires (67%) in 2005 started with the range or stove.

Electric ranges or stoves have a higher risk of fires, deaths, injuries and property damage, compared to gas ranges or stoves.

IN THE SADDLE (a poem)

Who carries your burden, who carries your load
On tumbleweed land or a long dusty road
Who asks you no questions, who tells you no lies
That four legged friend with the two honest eyes

This “cardpack” is available from a company in Ohio that carries equipment for endurance riders. This particular item is used for a vet card and/or map when participating in a competitive ride but the application for trail riders is obvious. Clip it to your saddle dee and your breastplate or anywhere that someone would look for your ID. Put a photocopy of your driver’s license, your insurance card, your Air Evac membership card, emergency contact info, some money and a copy of your Coggins. If anything happens on the trail, your companions will have all the info handy to get help for you.

The cardpack is made from sturdy Cordura with a clear plastic window and it attaches with either the two stainless clips on either side OR the loops on the backside. It is water resistant so you won’t have to worry about using it on a sweaty horse. The cost is $12, it comes in a variety of colors and is available from www.runningbear.com or by calling 800-533-2327.
