The Board of Directors met April 29th.
The waiver of liability was finalized and will be distriubuted to the 4
commercial members.
Jackie Goldsmith resigned from the Board
and Brenda Lawson was appointed in her place. At the May meeting the new
board members, Roy Sillman, Dorothy Holder and incumbent, Michelle Fleenor
will be introduced. A short bio on the new members follow.
Tom Pickard will be the contact personnel
with Big South Fork personnel on the new trailhead to be located on Obie
Blevins Road. Tom Jancek will be the assistant.
When the weather starts cooperating, trail
work, restroom completion, etc. will become a top priority. If you haven’t
been up for awhile, we have had loads of rain.
If a board member is absent 3 months
consecutively they will be replaced.
Tom Pickard, Trail Chairman prioritized
trail work with unsafe conditions being the first priority. Second will be
the blocked trails, followed by commitments to Big South Fork personnel and
general trail maintenance. These will be determined by the Board.
Several trails were discussed and work will
begin soon. If you see an unsafe area, please let us know.
For those of you who were unfortunate
enough not to be here for the April potluck, it was a rousing success. The
meat was wonderful and the one-man band was a huge success. He could play
and sing songs from almost every decade and did it very well. There were
approximately 100 people in attendance. So if you want a good time, try
to make the one in May.
One of the fundraisers designated for the
restroom completion is the Memorial Day Yard Sale. It will take place on
Friday 9:00 am to 4 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am to 2 pm. If you have
something to sell, tack, yard sale items, this is a good place to come and
share the company. This year there will be sandwiches and soft drinks so
plan on dropping by for lunch. A portion of your proceeds or a flat fee
for a table is the only charge. If you have a big item let me know and I
will put it in the newspaper ad.
Trail Committee
When you are riding and notice an unsafe place on our
trails, please advise Tom or one of the Board of Directors.
Public Liaison
Big South Fork is planning a new trail head access at the end of Obie
Blevins Road. The trailhead will be the Salt Pine Trailhead and will open
up a new area of the park for us. This will greatly benefit Spruce Creek
property owners and the surrounding area making our property even more
valuable. NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Dorothy and Gary Holder are full time residents of
Spruce Creek. They live on Crocket Creek Drive in the house with the bright
blue roof.
She was born and raised in northeast Mississippi. She
is a nurse at Jamestown Regional Medical Center. They moved here 3 years
ago to increase her horse experience. Dorothy was taught to respect, use,
and take care of the outdoors. She is an active hiker and horse back
rider. You can meet Dorothy and Mable, her bull dog, on the trails any
available time she has. She is willing to extend and continue that
practice in relation to the trails in Spruce Creek and surrounding areas.
She says, “May we, as a group realize the impact and keep it low as possible
on the environment, but at the same time maximize the fun of the great
outdoors.” Riding with Dorothy is a “hoot” so ride with her if you get the
chance.
Roy Sillman
was born and raised in Pittsburg, PA. He is a graduate of Carnegie Melton
University with a degree in Metallurgy. He held various positions in
engineering and management in the steel industry and operated his own
executive recruiting firm. He moved to east Tennessee in 1967 and has been

When you meet other horse riders, the smaller group should get
off the trail as far as possible to let the larger group pass. Try to keep
you horse’s head to the trail so it can see what is going on. Sometimes
rear ends tend to kick.

MAY POTLUCK – Annual Meeting
– Pavilion – 6:30 p.m. Association will provide meat – a donation taken
at the door - Come meet the new officers and board members.
Appreciation expressed
- We have been very lax in stating our
appreciation for some of the services that have been donated by the
non-development membership to the Association and especially in getting
the pavilion so comfortable. Gary and Lynn Delk have donated all the
plumbing supplies plus all the labor in getting lights and restrooms in
the pavilion. This has been an on-going process and they have been very
kind in taking care of us.
We
want to thank Sandra Waller for her generous donation for the electrical
supplies. This was donated to honor her late husband, Dave.
Larry
McMillan has donated loads of rock for trail use, plus he donated all the
meat for the April potluck. Larry and his crew worked all day to serve us
some delicious chicken and pork for supper and on time, too. The next
time you see these guys please give them a thumbs up for being so
generous.
for over 25 years. Activities included operating a
boarding barn, breeding Arabian horses and competitive trail riding. He
became a full time Spruce Creek resident in 2002.
Brenda Lawson was appointed by the Board to fulfill the
term of Jackie Goldsmith. She and her husband, Hugh, live in Spruce Creek
full time and raise Rocky Mountain horses. I don’t believe you will find a
person that loves to ride or loves horses more than Brenda. She rode all
winter this past winter. Brenda is usually accompanied by her Jack Russell,
