Newsletter

June/July 2006

On July 8, we had an emergency situation.  We were called out at 8 p.m. on 4 wheelers to look for Bill Moseley from the Highlands.  Lavera Peters found Bill’s horse in a barn with the saddle and 1 rein.  She called the police, rescue squad and several Spruce Creekers. There were15 people from the Spruce Creek area that responded. Bill was found and air lifted to Knoxville.  His condition is extremely grave with severe trauma to the head

If you can be called on in an emergency, please let me know.  We are compiling a list of names and phone numbers that will be distributed to the area campgrounds and developments in case something like this happens again.

There will be a donation taken at the July potluck for the benefit of the rescue squad.  These guys responded very fast and were extremely efficient.

There will also be a drive to join the Air-Evac.  In case you aren’t aware, you can join the Air-Vac for a nominal fee and in case of an accident you don’t have to worry about paying for a helicopter to get you to medical help asap.

It has gotten hot and muggy in Spruce Creek.  We are still riding, but it is early and back by noon.  I am sorry you didn’t receive a newsletter in June, but time and vacation caught me completely off guard.  I am combining the Board of Directors’ meeting info.

The Board of Directors met May 27 and June 24.  The waiver of liability was finalized and will be distributed to the 4 commercial members.

New officers were elected for 2006/2007.

            President  Mike Smith

            Vice President, Tom Pickard

            Secretary/Treasurer, Ruth Watson

New committee chairman are:

            Public Liasion, Brenda Lawson

            Fund Raising, Michelle Fleenor

            Trail, Tom Pickard

            Information, Ruth Watson

            Pavilion, Tom Jancek

Ken Pasternack has completed a map of the Spruce Creek trails and surrounding vicinity.   Copies will be put in a waterproof container and placed at the Pavilion.   The map will also be put on the website.

There has been some discussion on the bathrooms in the pavilion remaining open to the general public after completion.  The restrooms will be locked unless there is a function going on at the pavilion.

Appreciation expressed -  We want to thank Tom Jancek and his wife Barb for the 3 years of dedication they have put towards getting the Association off the ground and the pavilion on the ground.  Tom has worked tirelessly and sometimes not getting the credit he was due.  Anytime any thing was needed for trails or pavilion, Tom was there with equipment or time and sometimes just moral support.  He is aptly named the Spruce Creek Hardware, because if anyone needs ANYTHING, Tom usually has it, whether it is a wrench, a pipe fitting, or any other little item that was needed to fix a leak, pull someone out, or look for a lost sole.  We want to thank Barb for letting Tom do these things at the expense of not getting some of his work done at home.  When you see Tom and Barb give them

A handshake or a high five for without them, some things wouldn’t have gotten done

BREAK INS at Spruce Creek.  Lately there have been a few break ins in the Spruce Creek area.  Mostly what has been taken are hand tools, chain saws, etc.  If you don’t come up very often, and need someone to check on your house or property, let me know.  You can call me or e-mail rrawatson@twlakes.net or use the info button on the website.

National Trails Day

On June 3, National Trails Day, 26 Spruce Creekers worked on 4 trails for BSF.  By starting work on the Salt Pine Trail, Proctor Ridge Trail, Hicks Ridge Trail, and Yellow Cleft trail, we can now work in the park as needed without park personnel.  Wally Linder has promised park support by loaning us any tools that are needed for the work.  More volunteers are needed to do work in the park, picking up trash or just clearing brush.  If you want to volunteer for this type cleanup, call or e-mail Sue Duncan to let her know you are in the park, what day you worked and the number of hours that you worked.  Sue’s email address is Sue_Duncan@nps.gov .

Trails

Tom Pickard, Trail Chairman prioritized trail work with unsafe conditions being the first priority.  Second will be the blocked trails, followed by commitments to Big South Fork personnel and general trail maintenance.  These will be determined by the Board.

Several trails were discussed and work will begin soon.  If you see an unsafe area, please let us know.

Big South Fork is planning a new trail head access at the end of Obie Blevins Road.  The trailhead will be the Salt Pine Trailhead and will open up a new area of the park for us.  This will greatly benefit Spruce Creek property owners and the surrounding area making our property even more valuable.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Dorothy  Holder is a full time resident of Spruce Creek.  She lives on Crocket Creek Drive in the house with the bright blue roof.

She was born and raised in northeast Mississippi.  She is a nurse at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.  They moved here 3 years ago to increase her horse experience.  Dorothy was taught to respect, use, and take care of the outdoors.  She is an active hiker and horseback rider.  You can meet Dorothy and Mable, her bulldog, on the trails  any available time she has.   She is willing to extend and continue that practice in relation to the trails in Spruce Creek and surrounding areas. She says, “May we, as a group realize the impact and keep it low as possible on the environment, but at the same time maximize the fun of the great outdoors.”  Riding with Dorothy is a “hoot” so ride with her if you get the chance.

Roy Sillman was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA.  He is a graduate of Carnegie Melton University with a degree in Metallurgy.  He held various positions in engineering and management in the steel industry and operated his own executive recruiting firm.  He moved to east Tennessee in 1967 and has been involved in various horse-related activities for over 25 years.  Activities included operating a boarding barn, breeding Arabian horses and competitive trail riding.  He became a full time Spruce Creek resident in 2002.

Brenda Lawson was appointed by the Board to fulfill the term of Jackie Goldsmith.  She and her husband, Hugh, live in Spruce Creek full time and raise Rocky Mountain horses. I don’t believe you will  find a person that loves to ride  or loves horses more than Brenda.  She rode all winter this past winter.  Her Jack Russell, Holly, usually accompanies Brenda

 Fund-raisers

Don’t forget, we have Spruce Creek Trails shirts.  T’s are $15, Denim $25.  These have a colorful design and a portion of all shirts goes directly to Spruce Creek as a donation.  See Ruth Watson if you would like one.

Comments:

If you have to ride by yourself, make someone aware of the route you are taking and be sure to put a helmet on your head.  Bill left Highlands by himself on a horse he was having trouble with and got into serious trouble.  If the circumstances had been different, it might have meant life or death.  IF Lavera had not gone back to the barn and IF his horse had not gone to a strange barn, no one would have known he was gone until sometime the next day.  Take the time to make a call or get a chalk board and write where you are going and when you think you will be back and leave it where it can be found.  Horses are living, breathing creatures and you never know what can or will happen.
