THIS WILL BE YOUR LAST NEWSLETTER UNLESS… This is my last newsletter. I am resigning as the Newsletter Editor. Donna Smith will stay on as co-editor. Her duties are mailing out the newsletter to those who do not have e-mail. Some of you already know that we have a ministry called Christian Pastor Retreat (www.privatemountaingetaway.com) and we finished our second cabin on September 5. Both cabins are full every week and I do not have the time or energy to do one more thing. So, let me know if you want information on what is required. It’s not that hard and if you can use Microsoft Word and e-mail you are all set. I have enjoyed serving as one of your newsletter editors but now it’s time to concentrate on our cabin ministry. Joyce Pickard TRAIL BOSS NEEDED I’m also resigning as Trail Boss effective February 1, 2009. As Joyce stated above we are both heavily involved in our cabin ministry and don’t have much extra time. I, too, have enjoyed serving in this capacity but it is now time for someone else to step up and take this position. Tom Pickard
FINGER IN THE MOUTH By Rick Lamb, The Horse Show Does it annoy you when your horse is constantly playing
with his bit? It shouldn't. It keeps him happy! "I used to work for a gaited trainer and it was fun because every time these colts would stop, lock up, and just quit, not move, you know what he'd have us do? We'd reach down, put our finger in his mouth and it was like starting an old time car. As soon as he'd lick these lips, boom, this horse broke in the poll, lifted his shoulders, and trotted off." So if your horse stalls, you have the key to restarting him right in your hand.
CHOLLA THE PAINTING HORSEIf you have the internet you will want to look at: http://www.artistisahorse.com/The site has photos and a video of Cholla, a QH/Mustang who paints with a brush in his teeth. His owner has had his paintings exhibited all over the world and limited editions are $100. Now with winter setting in you might want to see if your horses have any talent!SHARP ALTICREST FIRE UNIT 11Some of you may not know the history of our log fire department building just beyond the Willie Lee General Store when you are heading to town. In the fall of 1999 Rodney Jones, our District #5 County commissioner, and Wallace Terry rallied the people in this community to come together to start a Fire Department and build a building. On November 11, 1999, a house-to-house drive was started to collect money to help build the fire hall. Throughout the community residents and property owners donated $4,656. Then on January 12, 2000 a half acre of property was donated by Maudie Geer and her family for the fire hall site.On April 15, 2000 a fund raiser was held at the Pine Haven Community Center and it brought in $3,410. Jim Barna Log Homes donated a log package to build the fire hall. Bill Dunavant (Sunshine Billy) was instrumental in getting this donation.Construction on the fire hall began in early April with excavation, pouring of the walls, etc. On May 20, 2000 the construction of the building began using the Jim Barna log package. Stoney Rich and the other Rich brothers and their families led the effort in constructing the building as they had worked for Jim Barna Log Homes. Several of the original people in Spruce Creek helped with the construction, including Pete Peters, Ivan Whitehead and Tom Pickard, plus neighbors Joe Keyes and John Walker. On Saturdays the site looked like an old fashion barn raising. Peter Peters and his crew who installed the roof, Ed Brady installed the septic system and Plateau Redimix helped with pouring concrete and setting trusses. Fentress County donated and delivered tons of rock fill for the site.Gene Lowery was elected Fire Captain and organized the Fire Department. Tom Pickard was one of the early volunteer firemen and subsequently served as Fire Captain after Gene passed. People you might know who have been volunteer firemen include: Johnny Geer, Donny Geer, Jeff Huff, Brian Huff, Joe Keyes, Don Phillips and Rudy Slaven.Building dedication was held on Saturday, March 24, 2001 with John Mark Wendel, a State Senator, giving a plaque to Maudie Geer. Many other public officials also attended the dedication and a dinner was held afterward in the fire station.Fire trucks in excellent condition have been secured for pennies on the dollar through the efforts of Charlie Kerns, Pall Mall, who retired as a Lieutenant in the Fairfax, Virginia, Fire Department. Charlie has also secured fire trucks for Unit 5, on the right side of the road half way to Jamestown and many other Fentress County Fire Departments. If there is a house fire in the neighborhood, Unit 11 is dispatched and Unit 1 from Jamestown is also dispatched. Many times Units 5 and 11 will coordinate their efforts in fighting a fire. Unit 11 has a tanker which can carry a lot of water to help.Unit 11 works with Big South Fork whenever there is a fire in the park and has been given specialized fire retardant coveralls and other gear. A recent reorganization has taken place in Unit 11 and the current Fire Captain is Jesse Wade.If you would like to make a donation to Unit 11, make the check out to Fire Unit #11 and mail to Ralph Babb, 2645 Leatherwood Ford Road, Jamestown, TN 38556.

After a long trail ride in cold months, do you put your horse in the trailer still tacked up for the trip home? Keep large gluteal muscles from stiffening in the cold with this equine butt blanket! Pictured is the rug from Cadillac Tack. Waterproof nylon cordura exterior is breathable from the underside but waterproof from the outside. Soft polartec lining on the bottom side wicks moisture away from your horse to keep him dry, warm, & cozy. Contoured to fit around the back of the saddle with lots of velcro straps for attaching. Also has a tail strap to prevent flipping or blowing up by the wind. Can be rolled up and tied with two velcro straps so it's out of the way when not in use but handy if you need it. Machine wash and dry. Rump Rug from Cadillac Tack ($56), EasyBun Warmer from Sportack ($61.75) and CYA Rump Rug ($65) are a few of the possibilities. This differs from a quarter sheet in that it attaches to your saddle when you need it, and is not something that you have to put on under the saddle.WHEN SENDING EMAIL to many people - use the Bcc: field A friend of mine almost went into orbit when I sent her an e-mail with her email name along with several others on the “TO” line and she replied with an angry reply. I have since looked up information on this practice and found the following. You might want to start using the Bcc field more often. The information I found follows: Sending emails to many people at once is a cool thing we all like (especially spammers...). However, if you use the To: field or even the Cc: field you will send an email that has all it's recipients packed up nicely in that field, all ready for the pruning of spammers and other low-life creatures. Using the Bcc: (Blind Carbon Copy) field is a good way to send your email to many people without having the recipient's email addresses visible to human eyes, and thus preventing regular email software from being able to reply to all your recipients.
