December 2006

October was a cold, wet and dreary month at Spruce Creek.  There were a few days that riding was desirable but more that was not.  The chili cookoff was a roaring success considering the weather.  Donna Smith and Bonnie Glasser were the winners of the aprons.  There were 11 entries and a lot of fun.  Next year we will be a little more organized as to how it will be ran.  We collected $416 and spent $40 on prizes and supplies.

Howard Duncan gave a very interesting talk on the Big South Fork and how some of the trails got their names.  He has worked for the Park for several years and knew a lot about its history and also the history of the mines and railroads.  Even with the cold, he kept all enthralled.

November and December have been fairly decent, although every once in awhile it would turn cold.  For those who don’t come up very often you will find several changes.  Lots of construction going on.

 Board of Directors Meeting

The Board of Directors met October 28, at the home of Ruth Watson.  Trails, again, were the topic of most of the meeting.  The trail to the Cumberland Valley trailhead will be the first priority.  The Evergreen trail will most likely have to wait on dryer weather.  There are several muddy spots and we will have to decide where to put rock and supplies to fix them.

The new trail head on Obie Blevins road was also discussed.  There has  been several monies pledged to get work started and it is estimated between $10,000 to $12,000 will be needed to complete the project.

 Trails

We still have some problem areas on trails, but we are trying to get the most-used or worst places fixed first.  If you see an unsafe place on the trail, please let Tom Pickard or one of the Board members know asap.

One of the  rough spots between Indian Rock Road and Taft Story Road was fixed. Mark Krider, True West, had a back hoe rented,  Judy Ashley bought 2 loads of rock, and with the help of Tom Jancek and Larry McMillan’s tractors, we covered the  electric conduit and filled the ditches.  This conduit was home to aprx. 7500 volts of electricity so we thought it beneficial to work there.  Hopefully, we can get the equipment to work on several of the rough spots before the riding starts heavy in the spring.

 2007 MEMBERSHIP

Everyone will be getting this newsletter by USPS along with a self addressed envelope.  Guess what this signifies.  Yes, once again the time of the year has rolled around where we must collect the dues.  A form is attached.  February 15, 2007 will be the deadline for membership fees.  If you have not paid by then, you will not receive the newsletter or any other mailings.  We encourage everyone to join.  The horrible rains we had in October and the winds in November did a number on the trails.  Your membership helps.

Also, if you would like to run for an office or serve on a committee, please contact Ruth Watson.  The new year will start in May and we will have 3  vacancies on the board and committee chairmen to elect.

Newsletter – If you signed up to receive your newsletter by e-mail, please notify me if you change your e-mail address.  OR, if you have a block on your e-mail that will not allow the newsletter to go thru, please notify me and I will send your newsletter by snail mail.  It seems every month I have a few that is returned.  I am set up by e-mail address and I don’t have names.
