April 2006

April 15, 2006

The Board of Directors held their first 2006 meeting on March 25.

The trails that need to be fixed and cutting new trails were discussed.  Some of trails that were fixed last fall need some touch up and new trails are waiting for us to cut them out so we can enjoy them.

Ken Pasternack has volunteered to use his GPS and computer to generate a map of the Spruce Creek Trails.  Several of you have expressed an interest in maps.  New signs will be put up that will hopefully keep newcomers from getting lost.

The potluck for March was postponed until April 1 because of the weather.  The evening was beautiful, cool but not bad and we had over 50 attendees.  Everyone is ready to get back into the swing of things.   If you plan to attend next month, please don’t forget your recipes.

On the last Saturday of every month April thru October, we will hold a Board meeting at 9:00 a.m. at the Pavilion and a potluck at 6:00 p.m.

APRIL POTLUCK

At the potluck on April 29th,  Jeff Crouch will be performing.  Jeff is a one-man band that has entertained us before.  Larry McMillan is cooking a hog and we will have a “pass the hat” donation.  Everyone plan to attend and if you want to participate by bringing an instrument, you will be more than welcome.  This is a good way to start off the potluck season.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate.  Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Newsletter

The newsletter will now be sent out every month during the months April thru November.  This is being done to keep you better informed.  If you have anything you want covered in the newsletter please let me know.  I will put it in at the 1st opportunity.

The newsletter is being sent out to several of you via e-mail.  If you cannot open it for some reason, it is available on the web site.

 Fund-raisers

Cookbooks were still being discussed, with a deadline of October.  Recipes are greatly needed so if you have a favorite please send it to me so I can get them compiled.

A spaghetti supper will be held at the Pavilion sometime soon.  Details will be forthcoming.

A chili cook off was also discussed.  Everyone has his or her  own favorite recipe for chili.   This will let us all enjoy some different cooking and we can make our own decisions as to how good your recipe is.

  Comments:

Please carry any cans, papers, or bottles out if you carry them in.  Someone has to pick up your trash if you discard it.  Be responsible and it will pay dividends.

 Trails Committee

Tom Pickard is working with the personnel at Big South Fork trying to get some of the park trails fixed that adjoin the Spruce Creek Trails.  The Proctor Ridge gas line trail is hopefully going to have some of the rock removed and water bars put in.

Spruce Creek was well represented at the BSF Trail workday.  We had 26 workers present.  12 workers were chain saw approved.  Everyone I talked to had nothing but good things to say and how much fun they had.

When you are riding and notice an unsafe place on our trails, please advise Tom or one of the Boards of Directors.

 Public Liaison

Joyce Pickard was the Spruce Creek representative for a meeting with Big South Fork personnel and property owners in the Obie Blevins Road area.  They are planning a new trail head access in that area.  This will really make that side of the park accessible for Spruce Creekers and make getting to that area a lot safer.

 Nominating Committee

Judy Fistler, Nominating Chairman has submitted the 2006/2007 nominations for the ballot.  There are 3 people going off the Board and we have 3 names submitted for nomination.  We have begged, goaded and even tried threatening, but no luck in getting more people to agree to serve.  If you want a choice in the people serving as your Board of Directors – run next year.  If you have a problem with the way things are being done – run next year.  The choice is yours to do with what you want, but please do not criticize us as a Board for doing the best job we can.
